Being There Essay -- essays research papers fc
ââ¬Å"Being thereâ⬠is a story of a man named Chance who knew nothing other than gardening and what he saw on television. His actions, judgements, and thoughts were all a reproduction of his experiences with television shows and gardening. After being backed up into by a limousine driver Chance became the focus of Americaââ¬â¢s daily news. Although not being able to read or having any common knowledge about the outside world Chance uses his knowledge of gardening and what he sees on television to help him in conversations with people and to excel in the real world. à à à à à Having no contact with the outside world while growing up, television was Chanceââ¬â¢s only view of what society was like. By flipping through the channels, Chance noticed the different ways people would interact with each other. Television provided him with different ways of looking at people and society. Television was his escape to be whoever he wanted to be. When Chance came into contact with different people he had an idea of how to act in their presence. When Chance was about to have dinner with Mr. Rand and E.E. he decided to imitate ââ¬Å"the TV program of a young businessman who often dined with his boss and the bossââ¬â¢s daughterâ⬠(Kosinski, 39). à à à à à Also when Chance was being interviewed on ââ¬Å"This Eveningâ⬠, he used his knowledge of gardening and what he saw on television to get him through the interview. The Way We Were :: American America History
The Way We Were As you listen to the news, radio, or read a newspaper, you notice one thing in common after the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center in New York City--unity. New Yorkers have known to be "hard-ass'" and the rudest people you'll ever meet. Self-indulged in their own world, they knocked people down who stood between them and the next step ahead of them. We, as Americans, felt the effect of the destruction all over the nation, although it didn't happen in our hometown. Most people either knew someone, or knew someone who knew of someone that worked in the WTC building or were on those flights. Not until our safety was raped from us did we stop to unite, as a country, to help those in need. America is known as "the land of opportunities." Therefore, we are taught that to obtain our cultural goals, we must try to achieve them by almost any means necessary. America was a very self-absorbed country. For instance, look at the 80's, that era named "the era of greed." We're a very wealthy country; with wealth comes greed. We like to keep money in our pockets at all times--meaning we always want to have money. Everywhere you look now, there it is, the American flag: our symbol of pride. "One nation, under God with liberty and justice for all." We have become united as a nation. The American Red Cross has raised millions of dollars with the help of normal, everyday citizens. Celebrities have joined together and held telethons to raise millions of dollars also. The American flag has been in such high demands all over the country that they're almost impossible to find in stores. From car washes to simple donation buckets in supermarkets, everywhere you go people are contributing. Before the 9/11 attacks, one would never have doubts about who's on the same flight as you, or feeling compelled to wash your hands after touching the mail. We took for granted what most people don't have--freedom. The freedom to walk down the street without the fear of seeing a terrorist act and living without the fears of being on a national heighted security alert for more terrorist attacks. Hell, we're "the land of the free," or perhaps we took for granted that we really were. Because of these attacks, many people are having second thought about doing many everyday things.

Realism and Romanticism: Similarities and Differences Essay
Romanticism and Realism, the two major threads in art and literature in the nineteenth century, both clearly had their roots in the burgeoning industrialism of the world around them. While both strove to show real people and question who was in power, Romanticism did this through the individual and exotic or even supernatural situations, while Realism focused on the average person and very real and harsh settings. Romanticism can be seen in Faust by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe as it tells the story of an individual and his relations with the supernatural, whereas Realism is shown by A Dollââ¬â¢s House by Henrik Ibsen, a play about the average household and the reality of marriage. However, while they have their differences, both these deal with defiance of and the disillusionment with authority. Two of the most important aspects of Romantic literature can be found in Goetheââ¬â¢s Faust, as it is about Heinrich Faust, one singular person, and how he and his life are influenced by the supernatural. In Faust, the title character is visited by Mephistopheles and has his life dramatically changed as a consequence of a heavenly wager on his life between Mephisto and God. God describes Faust as confused, but nonetheless one of his followers, when the Devil wagers him that, ââ¬Å"You shall lose him yet / Provided you give me permission / To steer him gently the course I setâ⬠(pg 849). Because of this, Faust enters into a deal with Mephistopheles wherein he is promised anything, as long as he does the same for Mephisto in hell after he dies. From this he gains several things, including youth and his lover Gretchen.

Research Proposal Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words - 2
Research Proposal - Essay Example Deeper analysis of the marketing mix will provide an adequate understanding of the concept hence accurate strategies. The following is a framework that will aide in conducting studies on marketing mix. The framework provides the rationale, research questions and objectives, review of literature, methodology, and ethical problems. Rationale Contemporary business organizations continue to experience increased competition hence the need to have effective marketing strategies. In order to make a marketing strategy effective, there is need for every stakeholder involved to ensure that various components of marketing are protected (Iacobucci, 2012: 116). The main components of marketing include product, price, promotion, and place. Every effective market strategy balances between the product, price, promotion, and place. A poor balance or composition of each of the four components definitely leads to ineffective marketing strategy (Wenderoth, 2009: 52). Imperatively, effective marketing st rategies continue to appeal to many customers (Meyer, 2010: 78). Given the appeal that effective marketing strategies have on customers, every business enterprise needs to structure their promotional tools in a way that would incorporate the other three marketing components proportionately (Fried, 2005:48). Despite the many studies conducted on how to attain an appropriate marketing mix for the purposes of enhancing the marketing strategies, there is need for a more detailed research study especially in the contemporary environment where there has been dynamisms within tastes, preferences, fashions, and other components. As a result, the following is a research proposal, which provides adequate literature review, methodology, and ethical problems. The framework will be useful in conducting a quantitative analysis in respect to marketing mix. Research Questions and Objectives The main aim of this study is to establish how to develop appropriate marketing mix strategies that would not only be effective to a business enterprise but also appeal to the customers. Therefore, this study aims at finding answers to different questions that include: 1. What percentage of customers within soft drink sector consider price as the most determining marketing mix component in making buying decisions? 2. How does the buying decisions of consumers within the soft drink industry affected by product market mix? 3. Are consumersââ¬â¢ buying decisions based on perceptions in respect to products of soft drink firms affected by promotion market mix? 4. What impact does place as a market mix has on the buying behaviours and decisions of consumers within the soft drink industry? Based on the above research questions, the objectives of this research study in respect to the marketing mix strategies include: 1. To identify the percentage of customers within soft drink sector that consider price as the most determining marketing mix component in making buying decisions. 2. To establish the changes in consumers buying decisions on the basis of soft drink products. 3. Cost Effectiveness for Smoking Cessation Assignment
Cost Effectiveness for Smoking Cessation - Assignment Example This relatively new (it was invented in China, 2003) device fully reproduces the process of smoking. Moreover, it is not harmful and helps to give up a bad habit. Although smoking cessation by means of electronic cigarettes seems to be a good method, a lot of people do not want to try this. It happens because there is a myth that these cigarettes are too expensive and it is better to buy something else in this case. This statement does not face real situation. That is why it is necessary to investigate the cost effectiveness and peculiarities of electronic cigarettes. The research concerning the problem under analysis was conducted by means of the following methods: 1) An anonymous Internet-based and cross-sectional survey. It took place among the first-time purchasers of electronic cigarettes. 2) Interviewing of people who smoke 3) The systematization and analysis of the information received in the process of investigation. 4) Anonymous interrogation. As for the results of my resear ch, there happened to be more men than women in the study. Thus, there were 71.5 percent of men and 28.5 percent of women. The majority of people asked had been smoking for six or even more years. The first group composed approximately 81.1 percent. It should be noted that a lot of people participating in the investigation tried to give up smoking several times (64.7 percent), but nothing helped them and there seemed to be no way out of this situation. Below are the details concerning demographic information, smoking characteristics and reduction of tobacco use after electronic cigarette use. Table 1. Demographic Information Variable N (%) Gender of the participants Male 153 (71.5) Female 61 (28.5) Age of the participants 19-24 41 (19.1) 24-44 114 (53) 45-64 48 (22.2) Over than 65 12 (5.7) Table 2. Smoking Characteristics Variable N (%) Years smoked or smoking history Less than 5 32 (14.8) 5-15 77 (35.5) 16-30 67 (30.9) More than 30 41 (18.8) The number of previous attempts to quit 0 16 (7.8) 1-2 59 (27.3) 3-5 90 (42) More than 5 59 (22.8) Table 3. They noted that the desire to smoke was decreased by means of this device. These people started smoking nicotine cigarettes more rarely than usual. Approximately the half of the participants stated that they had given up smoking for a short period of time after buying electronic cigarettes. It should be stressed that more than thirty percent of respondents were not smoking at the six-month point. The relation of electronic cigarettes to six-mon th smoking status is demonstrated in the table below. Table 4.
